ARMSTRONG AUDITORIUM PRESENTS THE TCHAIKOVSKY ST. PETERSBURG STATE ORCHESTRA
Historic Russian orchestra in concert March 1 at 7:30 p.m.
Armstrong Auditorium will continue its 2011-2012 season with the historic “Tchaikovsky” St. Petersburg State Orchestra on Thursday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m.
The orchestra was founded in the years following World War II and has been under the direction of many world-renowned conductors from the St. Petersburg Conducting School. Over the past ten years, the orchestra toured internationally and developed a broad repertoire, including the regular commissioning and performance of new compositions.
“At Armstrong Auditorium we champion Oklahoma as an international center for the performing arts,” Shane Granger, the house manager stated. “We welcome the 93-piece orchestra and conductor Roman Leontiev to Edmond. With only 75 feet separating the stage from the back of the auditorium, the audience will experience the St. Petersburg State Orchestra as it’s meant to be.”
The evening’s program features works by master composers Richard Wagner, Frédéric Chopin and Sergei Prokofiev. Celebrated piano soloist Alexandre Pirojenko will perform Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor.
The “Tchaikovsky” St. Petersburg State Orchestra is the second performance in Armstrong Auditorium’s 2011-2012 Russian Masters series. On April 22, the Kuleshov-Mogilevsky Piano Duo completes the series.
Armstrong Auditorium provides a flexible ticket pricing system. Tickets to see the “Tchaikovsky” St. Petersburg State Orchestra start at $42 for seating in the balcony and $80 for orchestra seating.
Armstrong Auditorium is also currently host to the world premiere of nearly a dozen archaeological artifacts discovered in Jerusalem in the exhibit, “Seals of Jeremiah’s Captors Discovered.” The interactive exhibit includes figurines, large vessels and royal seal impressions dating to biblical times, which will be on display in the lobby during the performance.
