Edmond Junior Rowers Win Bronze in Rio

OKLAHOMA CITY – Aug. 14, 2015 Edmond rowers Hannah Malzahn and Sarah Ondak won bronze medals at the World Junior Rowing Championship as part of the Junior U.S. Rowing Team. Malzahn and Ondak are members of the OKC RIVERSPORT Junior Crew and earned their spots on the team at the Junior National Team selection camp in June.

The World Junior Rowing Championships were held Aug. 5-9 on the same course that will be used for the 2016 Olympic Games regattas in Rio. Germany won the gold medal with a time of 6:39.7. Italy edged past the U.S. in the final few strokes for silver with a time of 6:43.2. The U.S. registered a time of 6:43.8.

“I am really proud of everything Hannah and Sarah have done this summer,” said Brian Ebke, OKC Boathouse Foundation Director of Youth Rowing and Girls Varsity Head Coach. “The road wasn’t easy to get there, but they were both tireless and persistent in their pursuit of success over the last 2 months. To see that pay off with a medal at Junior Worlds was extremely gratifying.”

An Edmond resident and recent graduate of Harding Prep in Oklahoma City, Malzahn plans to attend the University of Tennessee this fall on a rowing scholarship as a coxswain.

Ondak, a junior at Edmond Santa Fe High School, will be returning to the OKC RIVERSPORT Junior crew next season.

“I’m excited to have Sarah come back and share her experiences with the rest of the program, and I know she will add speed to our group as we continue to work towards taking our juniors to the next level nationally,” Ebke said.
